Los Angeles Lakers guard-forward Luka Doncic expects the franchise to use the upcoming offseason to assemble a championship-caliber roster, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
Doncic, 27, is coming off a season in which he finished fourth in MVP voting and earned his sixth consecutive All-NBA First Team selection. A Grade 2 strain of his left hamstring sidelined him for the entire postseason, ending the Lakers’ title hopes and extending his wait for the first NBA championship he frequently calls his “biggest goal.”
“Luka wants to be a championship team yesterday,” a source close to Doncic told ESPN. “Ever since the trade, they’ve always told us: summer of ’26. We’re so excited that the summer of ’26 is here.”
The Lakers enter the offseason with roughly $50 million in salary-cap space and several tradable first-round picks. Team officials have maintained regular contact with Doncic to gauge his preferences, league sources said. High on his wish list are:
- An athletic center who can finish lobs and protect the rim
- True 3-and-D wings to space the floor
Los Angeles acquired Doncic via trade in 2024 and, at that time, assured him major roster upgrades would arrive in the summer of 2026. With multiple roster-building avenues now open—free agency, trades and draft assets—the organization faces heightened scrutiny to deliver on that commitment.
On the health front, Doncic has fully recovered from the hamstring strain and has begun his regular offseason training program, positioning him to participate in the Lakers’ summer plans without restriction.
