Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James, who turns 42 before next season and is poised for an NBA-record 24th year, is said to have no reservations about continuing as a secondary option alongside Luka Doncic.
ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, citing a source close to the veteran star, reported that “LeBron rocks with Luka,” indicating the arrangement would not influence James’ pending free-agency decision. James, Doncic and guard Austin Reaves formed a new on-court hierarchy midway through the 2025-26 campaign, with James sliding comfortably into the third-option spot.
Despite multiple role changes, James finished last season averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists while shooting 51.5 percent from the field. Photos from a Jan. 28, 2026, game in Cleveland captured James and Doncic standing side by side during the Lakers’ visit to Rocket Arena.
Lakers officials still face financial questions. James could depart if a significant pay cut elsewhere proves more attractive, but team sources insist his willingness to defer to Doncic will not be a sticking point. The size of any new Lakers deal is expected to signal how aggressive the front office plans to be this summer.
Meanwhile, league insiders have floated the possibility of 37-year-old forward Kevin Love reuniting with James in Los Angeles. Love would likely fill an end-of-bench leadership role and is not expected to alter broader roster plans.
