Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic spent part of his offseason at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England, where he attended the 154th Open Championship and met two-time major winner Scottie Scheffler.
The Open’s official Instagram account released footage of Doncic walking the grounds and greeting Scheffler, a Dallas native who followed Doncic’s career with the Dallas Mavericks before the Slovenian star was traded to Los Angeles. Both athletes exchanged compliments when they met near the practice area.
Doncic, 27, is traveling as part of the Jordan Brand summer tour after returning home to Ljubljana earlier in the offseason. He has been fully cleared since a Grade 2 strain in his left hamstring ended his MVP-caliber campaign and kept him out of the Lakers’ postseason run.
Los Angeles advanced past the Houston Rockets in six games before losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals without their leading scorer. The extended recovery period allowed Doncic to avoid rushing back and to enter the summer without health restrictions.
After picking up golf last year with teammate Austin Reaves and former teammate LeBron James, Doncic has used the sport for team bonding alongside head coach JJ Redick. He plans to refine his game during the break and expects informal matches with Reaves once training camp begins.
Speaking recently about Los Angeles’ revamped roster, assembled by general manager Rob Pelinka following James’ departure, Doncic said he is “excited” about the new group. The Lakers reshuffled the lineup while keeping an eye on Doncic’s player option for the 2028-29 season, aiming to build a contender around their franchise cornerstone.
The visit to The Open offered a brief respite from basketball duties, giving Doncic time to recharge before what he and the organization view as a pivotal year.
