LAS VEGAS — First-round pick Cameron Carr left his initial NBA Summer League determined to keep improving after logging meaningful minutes for the Los Angeles Lakers.
The 21-year-old guard, selected No. 24 overall after the Lakers moved up one spot in June, averaged steady production during the California Classic and Las Vegas sessions. At 6-foot-5, the former Baylor standout displayed three-level scoring, athletic finishes and defensive flashes while helping the Lakers win six straight games before a semifinal loss to the Golden State Warriors on July 18 at Thomas & Mack Center.
“Just keep learning, keep my composure, keep level-headed,” Carr told The Sporting Tribune after the tournament. “Focus on the next thing, don’t let it take me out of the game on the other end, and keep competing.”
Los Angeles opened Summer League play with a lopsided defeat in the California Classic but rebounded behind Carr’s perimeter shooting and off-ball movement. He credited veteran teammates on the summer roster for his quick adjustment. “I got to lean on a lot of good players that have been here a little bit,” he said. “I’ve gotten to ask them questions, learn from them, be a sponge. It’s fun to step on the court with these guys and, of course, win.”
Although the Warriors denied the Lakers a place in the championship game, head coach JJ Redick now turns attention to fall training camp, where Carr will compete for rotation minutes. Former two-time All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas, observing from the sidelines, predicted the rookie could make an immediate impact if he carries over his offensive aggression and continues refining his defensive instincts.
“I can only be where my feet are right now,” Carr said after the semifinal exit. “We just lost the game, so I’ll go to the drawing board, keep learning and keep growing as a player.”
