LeBron James Says New Golf Habit Has No Bearing on NBA Future

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James said his growing passion for golf should not be viewed as a hint that he is ready to leave basketball.

“I’m happy that I picked it up at this point in my life, but that has nothing to do with my decision on my playing career,” James told Time’s Sean Gregory. “I love golf, man. But I also know the main thing is the main thing, and that’s my love for the game of basketball.”

The 41-year-old has posted several Instagram stories from local courses since the Lakers’ season ended on May 11. His off-court activity has prompted speculation that retirement could be near, a notion he publicly rejected.

James enters the summer on an expiring contract after failing to reach an extension with Los Angeles last offseason. Free agency opens on June 30, and multiple contenders are expected to pursue the four-time NBA champion. According to league sources, James intends to wait and see how general manager Rob Pelinka reshapes the Lakers’ roster before making any decision.

Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, who represents James, told reporters he has not yet spoken with the forward about his next move.

Despite his age, James led Los Angeles past the Houston Rockets in the first round of the 2026 playoffs and continued to post strong numbers in his 23rd NBA season. A potential 24th campaign remains on the table while he weighs his options—and practices his short game.
