Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James says the night he became the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft was far more stressful than celebratory. Speaking on the latest episode of the “Mind the Game” podcast with Steve Nash, the four-time league MVP admitted he “didn’t have a great time” at Madison Square Garden despite realizing a childhood dream.

“I’m getting a headache thinking about it,” James said. “I think the whole city of Akron made their way to New York City—planes, trains, automobiles, everybody. How long is the drive? Eight hours? My uncle drove because he doesn’t like flying.”

James recalled that close friends and relatives either flew or made the eight-hour trek by car, creating a logistical crush that overshadowed the excitement of hearing his name called by then-NBA Commissioner David Stern. “It was a lot,” he repeated. “I was happy as hell. It was a beautiful moment. We celebrated a little bit after the draft, but it was a lot.”

Because he was the consensus top prospect, the 19-year-old phenom never faced uncertainty about where—or when—he would be selected. Still, the demands from a large entourage left him feeling more burdened than jubilant on what should have been a carefree night.

Lakers’ 2026 Draft Outlook

Looking ahead, the Lakers hold the 25th pick in the 2026 NBA Draft and have been linked to several prospects. League sources indicate the organization is prioritizing a “high-motor” player with its lone selection.

The moment of being drafted remains a career highlight for every player, James included, and it will be no different for those who step onto the stage in 2026.
