The Sacramento Kings are preparing to sever ties with veteran forward DeMar DeRozan unless a trade materializes, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
Scotto reported that the Kings intend to waive and stretch DeRozan’s contract if no deal is reached. The 36-year-old is entering the final year of his agreement and is owed $25.7 million for the 2026-27 season, though only $10 million is guaranteed through Jan. 10. The structure offers Sacramento flexibility as the club seeks to rework a roster that finished 22-60 and missed the playoffs.
DeRozan, who turns 37 in August, remained dependable last year, appearing in 77 games while averaging 18.4 points, 4.1 assists and 2.9 rebounds. Sacramento acquired him in a three-team deal with the Chicago Bulls in the summer of 2024, hoping his scoring would push the team into postseason contention. Instead, the Kings endured another disappointing campaign and appear ready for more roster changes.
Should DeRozan clear waivers, the Los Angeles Clippers are expected to show interest, Scotto added.
Sacramento is also exploring additional ways to trim payroll. Guard Zach LaVine is projected to pick up his $49 million player option for next season, and reports have linked the Kings to trade discussions involving center Domantas Sabonis.
