LeBron James has informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he will not return for the 2026-27 NBA season, ending an eight-year run with the franchise. The decision, first reported earlier this week, signals that Game 1 of the 2026 first-round series against the Houston Rockets on Apr. 18, 2026, was his final appearance in purple and gold.

Shortly after the club released a statement expressing gratitude for his contributions, James responded on social media early on Jun. 30, 2026. “No, THANK YOU! Truly an honor to wear the [Lakers colors] while trying to continue the greatness & legacies that came before me! Hope I made a few proud during my stint.

Mutual benefits since 2018 arrival

James joined the Lakers in the summer of 2018 after leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a championship two years earlier. Los Angeles, still searching for a new centerpiece following Kobe Bryant’s 2016 retirement, built around the four-time MVP and reclaimed the league’s top spot by capturing the 2020 NBA title. James earned his fourth Finals MVP during that run.

During his tenure, the forward navigated the franchise through its longest down period, the COVID-19 shutdown, and the 2020 death of Bryant. He also broke the NBA’s career scoring record and, in 2024, became the first player to share the court with his son, Bronny James.

Next stop unclear

League sources identify the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers as early contenders for James once free agency opens. Where the 41-year-old ultimately signs remains unknown.

With his departure confirmed, the Lakers are expected to retire James’s No. 23 jersey at Crypto.com Arena in the future.
