EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The Los Angeles Lakers introduced first-round draft pick Cameron Carr on Friday, June 26, at the UCLA Health Training Center, one day after selecting the Baylor University wing with the 24th overall choice in the 2026 NBA Draft.
General manager Rob Pelinka opened the team’s offseason by acquiring the 21-year-old in a trade with the New York Knicks immediately after the pick was made. Carr arrived following a standout junior season at Baylor, where he averaged 18.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.3 blocks while shooting 49.4 percent from the field, 37.4 percent from three-point range and 80.1 percent at the foul line.
Offseason priority: add strength
Speaking to reporters, the 6-foot-5 guard, who owns a 7-foot-1 wingspan, said his primary focus this summer is to increase his body weight.
“First things first, got to put on some weight,” Carr noted. “That’s going to be an emphasis, be in the weight room as much as possible. It’s going to be my second home.” He added that learning from the team’s veterans will be part of his daily routine.
Projected role in Los Angeles
The Lakers believe Carr’s length and athleticism can complement Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves on the perimeter. Coaches view him as a potential help defender and off-ball chaser, roles that could expand if he successfully adds strength.
Pelinka’s recent draft strategy has centered on high-energy, versatile athletes—evidenced last year by the selection of Adou Thiero—and the front office expects Carr’s developing shooting profile to fit that template.
Draft-night reaction
Carr recalled his immediate thoughts after learning of the Lakers’ decision. “I’m going to the Lakers! It felt surreal,” he said. “I’m still trying to wrap my head around it, but it’s nothing but excitement and motivation to work.”
With the draft complete, Los Angeles now turns to free agency and the trade market to continue shaping a roster expected to contend in 2026-27.
