Los Angeles, CA — Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren plans to investigate sign-and-trade possibilities when negotiations open Tuesday, creating a potential opportunity for the Los Angeles Lakers, league sources told The Athletic.

Duren, 22, is coming off his best NBA season, earning Third Team All-NBA honors after averaging 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists while shooting 65% from the floor. Despite that production, Detroit’s initial offer reportedly fell short of a maximum contract, and the gap has prompted the restricted free agent to consider alternatives.

Because the Pistons can match any offer sheet, Duren’s camp views a sign-and-trade as the most practical route to a new team. The Lakers, armed with significant cap space and future first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, have long sought a high-level starting center to pair with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Duren’s age, athleticism and rim protection fit the organization’s stated priorities.

Detroit, however, continues to signal reluctance to let its All-Star leave. NBA insider Chris Haynes reported Tuesday that the Pistons “will not be moved” and remain focused on reaching an agreement to keep Duren.

Should Detroit soften its stance, Los Angeles is expected to gauge the cost of a trade package. If the Pistons refuse to engage, the Lakers could pivot to unrestricted free agent Mitchell Robinson, who is widely expected to depart the New York Knicks.
