Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James said playing his 23rd NBA season at age 41 proved as challenging as it was rewarding, noting that injuries, limited preparation time and the responsibility of guiding younger teammates shaped the year.
Speaking after the Lakers were knocked out of the 2026 playoffs, James recalled missing training camp, the entire preseason and the first 14 regular-season games because of an early injury—an experience he had never faced before. “Getting back to the level I expect from myself was a real test,” he said, adding that he questioned whether he could still perform at his standard.
Despite the slow start, James helped Los Angeles capture a first-round victory over the Houston Rockets, a series that included players who had never appeared in the postseason or advanced past the opening round. James called sharing that breakthrough with inexperienced teammates “pretty awesome,” emphasizing that he aims to leave a positive mark every year he takes the floor.
The four-time MVP also discussed his ongoing leadership role. With at least one rookie joining the roster each season, James said he makes a point of demonstrating professionalism both through his actions and his voice. “It’s always been my responsibility,” he explained.
James has not decided whether he will return for a 24th season. Contract talks with the Lakers remain ahead, and both sides have expressed interest in continuing the partnership, though negotiations have yet to begin.
