Matisse Thybulle Enters Lakers Camp Fully Recovered After Two Injury-Plagued Seasons

The Los Angeles Lakers will open training camp with newly signed wing Matisse Thybulle cleared for full participation, according to a report from The Athletic published Monday.
The 29-year-old guard, regarded as one of the NBA’s top perimeter defenders and a two-time All-Defensive Second Team selection, has missed 97 games over the last two years. Knee inflammation that required surgery sidelined him at the start of the 2025 campaign, and a severe ankle sprain with a torn ligament cost him 67 games that season. In 2025-26, a torn UCL in his left thumb and subsequent right knee tendinopathy limited him to 52 appearances.
Team officials believe those health issues are behind him. Before the injuries, Thybulle played at least 65 games in each of his first five NBA seasons and averaged 1.6 steals per contest. He also improved his three-point accuracy during his abbreviated stints on the court, hitting 43.8 percent from long range in 2025 and 39.8 percent last season on more than three attempts per game.
Thybulle chose the Lakers in free agency after conversations with head coach JJ Redick and star guard Luka Doncic. Los Angeles hopes his combination of disruptive defense and emerging perimeter shooting will bolster a roster aiming to return to contention.
