The Los Angeles Lakers announced that guard Austin Reaves has suffered a Grade 2 strain of his left gastrocnemius muscle and will be re-evaluated in approximately four weeks.
Reaves was injured during the team’s Christmas Day loss to the Houston Rockets at Crypto.com Arena. The 25-year-old logged 15 minutes before exiting, only his second appearance after missing the previous three games with a separate calf issue.
An MRI confirmed the strain and ruled out more significant damage, but the organization plans to handle his rehabilitation cautiously to avoid any setbacks.
Reaves is in the midst of a career year, averaging 26.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists while shooting 50.7 percent from the field and 36.5 percent from three-point range. He is also averaging more than eight free-throw attempts per game and converting 87.3 percent at the line.
Teammate Luka Doncic, who dealt with a calf strain last season, offered support after speaking with Reaves. “Just be there to support him. Take your time, calves are dangerous,” Doncic said.
The Lakers will provide another update when Reaves is re-evaluated in four weeks.
