The Los Angeles Lakers are still looking to fortify their frontcourt and have expressed internal interest in Chicago Bulls forward Jalen Smith, according to The Athletic’s Dan Woike.
Team officials reportedly admire Smith’s high motor and the outside shooting touch he has developed. The 6-foot-8 big man, a former lottery pick, is entering the final season of his contract at $9.5 million.
Production in Chicago
Since arriving in Chicago two years ago, Smith has averaged 9.1 points and 6.1 rebounds while hitting 37.3 percent of his three-pointers on more than four attempts per game. His improved perimeter game distinguishes him from Los Angeles’ current centers, although he is not the traditional rim-running presence the Lakers often favor.
Availability Uncertain
The previous Bulls front office was reportedly high on Smith, clouding the likelihood of a trade. Chicago has not indicated a willingness to move the 24-year-old, and his cost and size could complicate any pursuit by Los Angeles.
Lakers’ Current Frontcourt Options
Los Angeles completed a sign-and-trade for center Walker Kessler earlier in the offseason and later added 11-year veteran Kevon Looney. Durability concerns persist with Looney, who appeared in just 21 games for the New Orleans Pelicans last season after four straight campaigns of at least 74 outings. Hip and abdominal issues have limited his mobility in recent years.
With 16 players already under contract, the Lakers would need to clear a roster spot before adding another big man.
Doncic Schedules Team Minicamp
In the meantime, newly acquired superstar Luka Doncic has invited the entire roster to Slovenia for a four-day minicamp aimed at accelerating team chemistry ahead of training camp.
