The Los Angeles Lakers will open a critical summer next week, beginning with the first round of the NBA Draft on Tuesday, June 23, followed by free agency on June 30. As executives Rob Pelinka and JJ Redick map out their plan, one directive from franchise cornerstone Luka Doncic stands above all others: land a top-tier center.
ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported that Doncic, 27, has again told team officials his primary roster request is “an A-list center.” According to the report, the All-NBA guard delivered the same message immediately after arriving in Los Angeles 16 months ago.
The front office briefly sought to satisfy that wish last year by negotiating a trade for Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams. The deal collapsed because of concerns about Williams’ injury history, leaving the Lakers without a long-term solution at the position.
Deandre Ayton filled the role during the 2025-26 season but is not viewed internally as a permanent answer, while Jaxson Hayes continues to serve as a reliable reserve. Finding a premier big man remains challenging; few are available, and many are tied to restrictive contracts.
Restricted free agents Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz and Jalen Duren of the Detroit Pistons fit Doncic’s criteria, though their current teams can match any offer. Trade possibilities such as Jarrett Allen (Cleveland Cavaliers) and Isaiah Hartenstein (Oklahoma City Thunder) depend on both availability and price. The top unrestricted option, New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson, may not meet the “A-list” threshold Doncic envisions.
Doncic missed the conclusion of the regular season and the entire 2026 playoffs with a Grade 2 strain in his left hamstring but was cleared for full basketball activity on May 28. His clean bill of health places additional urgency on the Lakers to deliver roster upgrades before training camp opens this fall.
