Trae Young Expected to Re-Sign with Wizards on Three-Year Contract

All-Star guard Trae Young is poised to decline his current option with the Washington Wizards and enter free agency, yet league insiders anticipate he will remain in the nation’s capital.

During ESPN’s “Get Up” on June 18, 2026, analyst Brian Windhorst reported that Young is “going to re-sign with the Wizards, likely on a three-year, very large contract.” Specific financial terms were not disclosed.

The 27-year-old was acquired from the Atlanta Hawks midseason, forming a backcourt–frontcourt pairing with Anthony Davis that Washington hopes will accelerate its rebuild. Multiple reports have indicated Young has enjoyed his brief tenure with the organization and is enthusiastic about its long-term direction.

Washington holds the No. 1 overall pick in next week’s NBA Draft, positioning the club to construct a core built around Young, Davis and the incoming top selection.

Injuries limited Young to 15 games last season, but prior to the setback he averaged 24.2 points and a career-best 11.6 assists. Despite technically entering the free-agent market, most signs continue to point toward the four-time All-Star remaining with the Wizards on a new multiyear deal.
