Los Angeles Lakers center Deandre Ayton said the backing he received from head coach JJ Redick and the club’s coaching staff was a constant during a season he described as “humbling.” Speaking after the Lakers’ playoff exit, Ayton praised Redick’s confidence in him despite inconsistent stretches on the court.
“He really gave me some burdens off my shoulder,” Ayton said, noting that Redick “showed in the media that he had my back as well.” The 27-year-old big man added that he felt honored to play for a coach who “never hesitated to call me out” while still expressing belief in his contributions.
Ayton, acquired last summer in hopes of revitalizing his career, finished the regular season with numbers below his career averages but eventually embraced a narrower role as a rim runner, rebounder and defender. His effort proved critical in the first-round series against the Houston Rockets, where his defense helped limit All-Star Alperen Şengün. Ayton struggled in the second round versus the Oklahoma City Thunder but maintained that Redick’s trust remained intact.
With a player option for the 2026-27 season, Ayton’s future in Los Angeles is uncertain. However, he acknowledged that Redick’s support could influence his offseason decision. “He’s a really good coach,” Ayton said. “I’m really proud to be coached by him and his staff.”
