Golden State’s season is over, and the franchise heads into a pivotal summer with head coach Steve Kerr still unsigned for 2026-27. Kerr, whose two-year extension was inked in 2024, recently acknowledged he has not decided whether to remain.
Decision Expected Within Two Weeks
According to The Athletic’s Nick Friedell and Marcus Thompson II, team leadership is optimistic Kerr and ownership will strike a new deal. ESPN’s Anthony Slater reports the 11-year coach plans to reach a conclusion in the next week or two.
In exit interviews, several players expressed hope Kerr returns, Friedell noted on social media. However, veteran forward Draymond Green voiced skepticism. “I hope he’s our coach next season,” Green said. “You want my opinion? I think not. Just because it feels like that. It felt like that was it.”
Slater added that the organization is not pursuing a “last dance” scenario; instead, it wants a retooled roster paired with a coach capable of matching renewed energy.
Green Holds $27 Million Option
Green’s name surfaced in trade chatter during the season, an uncommon occurrence in his tenure with the club. He holds a $27 million player option for 2026-27, and Friedell and Thompson report the Warriors will await his decision before weighing trade possibilities. With few movable contracts on the books, dealing Green could be the fastest path to a roster shake-up if he opts in.
“I’ve never been so uncertain since earlier in my career in what happens next,” Green told Slater. “I also hope I’m on this team next season. We also don’t know that. Man, if it was, what a run.” On a recent podcast, the 34-year-old said he hopes to play “another three years.”
Podziemski Seeks Extension
Second-year guard Brandin Podziemski, 23, told NBC Sports’ Dalton Johnson he hopes to finalize an extension this offseason. “I want to be here for the long term,” he said, noting the significance of staying with the franchise that drafted him. Friedell and Thompson indicate the Warriors share interest in keeping him despite occasional friction with fans.
Horford Weighing Player Option
After posting career lows of 8.3 points and 4.9 rebounds, 39-year-old Al Horford will take time before deciding on his 2026-27 player option, Friedell reported. Horford said he expects to play at least one more year but has not made a final choice.
The Warriors now await pivotal decisions from Kerr, Green, Podziemski and Horford as they chart a course for next season.
