New York center Karl-Anthony Towns delivered on both ends of the floor during the Knicks’ Game 1 victory in the NBA Finals, drawing praise from Zach Kram of ESPN and Fred Katz of The Athletic.

Defensive switch stymies Wembanyama

The Spurs initially hoped to keep 7-foot-4 rookie Victor Wembanyama free to help off Josh Hart, but San Antonio’s smaller defenders struggled to contain the 6-11 Towns in the paint. On defense, New York assigned Towns—rather than OG Anunoby—to guard Wembanyama. NBA.com matchup data shows Towns defended the Spurs star for nearly 80 percent of their shared minutes; Wembanyama managed just nine points on 2-for-11 shooting and committed five turnovers.

Towns credits late mother for calm performance

Speaking to Shaquille O’Neal on “Inside the NBA,” Towns said he felt “a calm and a peace” from his late mother, Jacqueline Cruz, who died in 2020 due to COVID-19 complications. “I felt really confident about today,” he said. “It was fun out here… Game 1 of the NBA Finals, you’re told all the pressure there’s going to be.”

Alvarado answers call off the bench

Guard Jose Alvarado, limited to 10 total points across four Eastern Conference Finals games against Cleveland, logged 11 minutes Wednesday—his longest stint since April 28—and contributed seven points and a playoff-career-high four rebounds. He entered after Jalen Brunson briefly exited with a knee scare. “My first thought was, Brunson better come back,” Alvarado told reporters. “My second thought is, this is what I do.”

Brunson avoids lingering issues

Brunson returned to finish the game despite Harrison Barnes colliding with his knee in the first quarter and Luke Kornet stepping on his ankle in the second. Kristian Winfield of the New York Daily News reported no lingering effects during Thursday’s practice.

‘Nova Knicks’ chemistry runs deep

The Athletic’s James L. Edwards III profiled the long-standing relationship among New York’s three former Villanova standouts—Brunson, Hart and Mikal Bridges. “We genuinely like playing together,” Brunson said last month. “We’ve created a chemistry that has been great.”
