Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry said he would “love” to team up with free-agent forward LeBron James and hopes the pairing becomes reality in the near future.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the American Century Championship golf tournament this week in Nevada, the four-time NBA champion confirmed he has been in contact with James as the league’s most prominent free agent weighs his next move.
“We’ve obviously talked,” Curry said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “He deserves all the patience and space to figure out what he wants to do as his career winds down. We all understand and appreciate that.”
Curry then added, “I would love to play with him, and hopefully that will be a reality soon.”
The two-time league MVP also joked that he is equally curious about James’s golf skills. “I’d say more so I’m interested to play golf with LeBron,” Curry said. “We’ll handle the basketball stuff.”
Warriors Remain in the Mix
Golden State is one of six teams believed to be pursuing James, along with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets. ESPN insider Shams Charania recently reported that all six franchises think they have a legitimate chance, with Cleveland, Miami and Philadelphia viewed as the current frontrunners.
The Warriors have kept their offseason plans flexible, fueling speculation that the front office is waiting on James’s decision before executing any major roster moves.
Whether Curry and James will eventually share an NBA backcourt is still uncertain, but Curry made clear he would welcome the opportunity.
