Sixers Narrow Front-Office Search to Four Leading Candidates

The Philadelphia 76ers have zeroed in on four primary contenders to replace outgoing president of basketball operations Daryl Morey, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line. The short list features Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Mike Gansey, Minnesota Timberwolves GM Matt Lloyd, Phoenix Mercury GM Nick U’Ren and current 76ers assistant GM Jameer Nelson.
Nelson, officially third in the team’s basketball hierarchy during the 2025-26 season, is the lone internal option under serious consideration. Stein reports the former NBA guard is virtually assured of a promotion, with the minimum outcome expected to be an elevation to general manager if he does not secure the top post.
Bob Myers, hired earlier this spring to oversee the search, continues to evaluate candidates while the club prepares for the June draft, where Philadelphia holds the No. 22 pick. Current GM Elton Brand could be offered a new role once the hiring process concludes, but he remains focused on scouting, Stein adds.
Staff Retention Efforts Underway
League sources told The Stein Line that Philadelphia is optimistic about keeping vice president of player personnel Prosper Karangwa amid outside interest. The Los Angeles Lakers have received permission to interview Karangwa for an assistant GM position, and the Dallas Mavericks are expected to submit a similar request.
Stein also notes that new Mavericks president Masai Ujiri is likely to pursue longtime Raptors associate Patrick Engelbrecht, currently Toronto’s director of global scouting, for a role in Dallas.
