NBA Front Offices Say They Still Lack Clarity on LeBron James’s Free-Agency Decision

NBA executives tracking LeBron James’s free-agency moves admit they remain unsure of the superstar’s next destination, according to a report from Joe Vardon of The Athletic.

Speaking Thursday at NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, several executives from teams pursuing James told the outlet they have little concrete information beyond public reports.

“We really don’t know. We just know what we read,” one general manager said. Another executive added that he has not even spoken with the four-time MVP during the current free-agency period.

The lone direct line of communication, league officials believe, is coming from Cleveland. Vardon reported that Cavaliers assistant general manager Brandon Weems—one of James’s closest lifelong friends—appears to be the only team representative who has contacted James since free agency opened. Weems was also seen with James in Akron over the July 4 holiday, a sighting that has fueled speculation but provided no confirmation of James’s plans.

The uncertainty leaves several franchises—Cleveland, Miami, Philadelphia, Golden State, Minnesota, Denver and Dallas among them—waiting for answers. One executive noted that even his personal friends continue to press him for updates.

“I don’t have to lie to them,” he said, underscoring how little concrete information is currently available.

The league’s front offices, like the fan base, remain in a holding pattern until James announces where he will sign.
