Rockets Add Renowned Shooting Coach Chip Engelland to Udoka’s Staff

The Houston Rockets are bringing longtime assistant coach Chip Engelland onto head coach Ime Udoka’s bench, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.
Engelland, 63, departs the Oklahoma City Thunder after a four-year run that began in 2022. During his stint in Oklahoma City, the club’s three-point accuracy climbed from an NBA-worst 32.3% in 2021/22 to finishes of 17th, first, sixth and ninth league-wide over the next four seasons.
The veteran shooting specialist launched his NBA career as a shooting consultant with the Detroit Pistons in 1999-2000, served as director of player development for the Denver Nuggets from 2003-05, and joined Gregg Popovich’s staff in San Antonio in 2005. Engelland remained with the Spurs until 2022, overlapping with Udoka for several seasons.
Houston finished the 2025/26 season 10th in three-point percentage (.364) but attempted just 31.5 threes per game, 28th out of 30 teams. The Rockets hope Engelland’s track record can help preserve their efficiency while increasing volume from beyond the arc in 2026/27.
