The Los Angeles Clippers have joined the list of teams exploring a sign-and-trade for unrestricted free-agent forward Jonathan Kuminga, league sources told HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.
The Clippers now stand alongside the Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Milwaukee Bucks as clubs showing interest in the 21-year-old. According to Scotto, Kuminga and his representative, Aaron Turner, are surveying offers with an emphasis on roster fit, playing opportunity and contract structure rather than aiming for a single salary figure.
Los Angeles may possess a financial edge in negotiations. The team holds a $17 million trade exception generated from its recent John Collins deal with the Detroit Pistons, allowing the Clippers to absorb salary without shipping out comparable contracts. The franchise also sits below the luxury-tax threshold, providing additional flexibility.
Any move, however, is on hold while the NBA completes its review of the Clippers’ pending trade that would send Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors. Front-office uncertainty surrounding that transaction is also affecting the club’s pursuit of restricted free-agent guard Bennedict Mathurin, who has drawn separate sign-and-trade interest from several teams.
If the Leonard trade gains approval and newcomers Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick officially join the roster, the Clippers would carry 14 standard contracts. That scenario could require a decision on whether to push aggressively for Kuminga, focus on retaining Mathurin, or attempt to secure both players.
Kuminga’s market continues to expand, and the Clippers’ ability to escalate their bid appears tied more to timing and roster clarity than to cap constraints.
