Dallas — League executives are expected to test the Dallas Mavericks’ willingness to trade Kyrie Irving before the start of next season, according to NBA reporter Jake Fischer on a Bleacher Report livestream.
Fischer said he is “not necessarily convinced” the eight-time All-Star will still be with Dallas on opening night, despite public statements from the Mavericks that they are eager to pair a healthy Irving with No. 1 draft pick Cooper Flagg. Irving missed the entire 2025-26 campaign while recovering from a torn ACL but is projected to be cleared for training camp this fall.
Philadelphia unlikely to break up core
In Philadelphia, Fischer said there is “little indication” the 76ers will part with either Joel Embiid or Paul George after another early playoff exit. Both stars are on maximum contracts that would require substantial salary coming back in any trade.
The franchise continues to view guard Tyrese Maxey and rookie wing VJ Edgecombe as foundational pieces, Fischer added. Former Cavaliers general manager Mike Gansey now oversees basketball operations in Philadelphia.
Draft protections gaining traction
Fischer also noted that teams expect to see more favorable language attached to traded first-round selections in future deals. As lottery outcomes grow less predictable, front offices are seeking greater protection to guard against draft volatility.
How clubs structure safeguards around their picks is becoming a key element of long-term roster planning, league sources told Fischer.
