The Detroit Pistons’ 60-22 regular-season campaign—third-best in franchise history—ended abruptly Sunday night with a 125-94 Game 7 home defeat to the Cleveland Cavaliers, who seized a 4-3 edge just 10:45 into the first quarter and never trailed again.

Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff struck an upbeat tone in his post-game remarks, telling reporters, “It’s not a disappointment at all … It’s a loss and it’s a tough loss, but that adjective will never be used with this group.” He praised the roster’s daily effort, willingness to grow and “special” locker-room spirit.

Guard Ausar Thompson took the opposite approach, vowing to remember the blowout as fuel for 2026-27. “I’m not forgetting. … That series, that felt personal,” he said.

Coach Secure, Core Pieces Up Next

League sources told The Athletic that Detroit’s front office views Bickerstaff as its long-term coach and hopes he remains for many years. The franchise announced a contract extension for him two weeks ago.

Thompson, who finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting and averaged 3.8 combined steals and blocks in the playoffs, becomes extension-eligible this summer. Team officials consider the 21-year-old a cornerstone despite his limited offensive output, according to the same report.

Roster Decisions Await

Coty M. Davis of The Detroit News noted that Detroit’s second unit struggled throughout the postseason and argued the club must add secondary scoring to lighten Cade Cunningham’s load.

Omari Sankofa II of The Detroit Free Press highlighted looming questions about center Jalen Duren’s next deal and whether forward Tobias Harris will be re-signed. ESPN’s Bobby Marks added that forward Isaiah Stewart becomes extension-eligible in July, further complicating the club’s cap outlook.

With a franchise-record win total freshly recorded yet another early playoff exit endured, Detroit now turns its attention to contract talks and roster upgrades designed to push the team deeper into next spring’s postseason.
