Nuggets open to sign-and-trade talks for Peyton Watson

The Denver Nuggets have begun listening to sign-and-trade proposals for restricted free agent Peyton Watson, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic. The shift comes as the team looks for ways to bolster the roster around two-time MVP Nikola Jokić while navigating salary-cap constraints.
Denver previously signaled it would match any offer sheet for the 21-year-old forward, but negotiations have stalled. Watson is reportedly seeking at least $25 million annually, while the Nuggets are trying to avoid crossing the NBA’s second tax apron.
Only the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers currently possess enough cap space to extend an offer of that size. The Clippers have been linked to Watson in past trade chatter and could revisit that interest.
The situation mirrors last month’s decision by the Utah Jazz to execute a sign-and-trade for center Walker Kessler rather than match a potential offer from the Los Angeles Lakers.
Even with sign-and-trade discussions under way, Denver’s preference is to keep Watson, Amick notes. Before injuries cut short his 2025-26 campaign, the 6-foot-7 wing averaged 17.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in 40 starts, making him a leading candidate for Most Improved Player.
The Nuggets also remain linked to free agent LeBron James, another Klutch Sports client alongside Watson. It is unclear whether shared representation will influence either negotiation.
Denver’s only offseason moves to date have been re-signing guard Tyus Jones and adding backup center Marvin Bagley III.
