Shai Gilgeous-Alexander returned to competitive play Friday, pouring in 26 points as Canada defeated Puerto Rico 110-84 in a FIBA World Cup qualifying game. The outing in Toronto marked his first appearance since the Thunder’s Game 7 loss to San Antonio in the Western Conference Finals.

The two-time MVP shared the court with his cousin, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and called the experience difficult to describe. “We’ve been through every step of our basketball career together, and to still be doing it at a high level together is an experience that’s hard to put into words,” he told reporters.

Gilgeous-Alexander also addressed Kawhi Leonard’s return to the Raptors, predicting that Toronto’s supporters will respond even more enthusiastically with a player of Leonard’s stature back on the roster.

Jazz lock in Tamar Bates

Utah has signed guard Tamar Bates to a two-year two-way contract, according to salary data provided to Spotrac. The 23-year-old, who impressed in the G League last season, is on the Jazz’s Summer League squad but did not play in Saturday’s opener.

Thunder explain Aday Mara selection

Oklahoma City’s decision to draft 7’3″ center Aday Mara was not driven by comparisons to Victor Wembanyama, general manager Sam Presti said. Presti cited Mara’s blend of passing vision and rim protection as the primary reasons the club valued him so highly.
