Oklahoma City Thunder guard Nikola Topic recently underwent a minimally invasive back procedure and is expected to be ready for the start of training camp in late September, the team announced Saturday.

The second-year player had a lumbar microdiscectomy—a surgery that repairs a bulging disc in the lower spine—performed by Dr. Andrew Dossett in Dallas. Thunder medical staff attended the operation.

Because of the surgery, Topic will not participate in Summer League games next month. No additional setbacks are anticipated, according to the club.

Series of health setbacks

Selected 12th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft, the Serbian guard has battled several medical issues since entering the league. A torn ACL suffered before the draft sidelined him for his entire rookie season. Last fall, he underwent surgery and chemotherapy after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Topic made his NBA debut on February 12 and appeared in 10 regular-season contests, averaging 5.2 points and 4.4 assists in 16 minutes per game. He also logged brief minutes in nine playoff outings.

Before moving to the NBA, Topic was considered a rising star in Europe and a projected high lottery selection prior to his ACL injury. Oklahoma City believes he could play a larger role next season if he maintains full health.
