New Celtics center Mitchell Robinson disclosed in a Facebook post that the hand injury he played through during the 2026 playoffs happened when he struck his truck in frustration after learning his youngest brother had been in a car crash.

Robinson revealed the incident shortly after agreeing to a three-year, $47.4 million deal with Boston. He wrote that the accident news reached him upon returning to New York following the Knicks’ series-clinching win in Cleveland. Unable to help while 910 miles away, he said he panicked, banged his hand on the vehicle, and later required surgery.

Season of Personal Strain

The 28-year-old center described the 2025-26 campaign as emotionally taxing, citing family issues, relationship problems and limited time with his daughter. “Those struggles affected my performance on the basketball court,” he noted in the post.

Playing Through Pain

Despite the injury, Robinson appeared in every Knicks postseason game except Game 2 of the second round against Philadelphia, which he missed because of illness. He averaged 4.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 13.9 minutes during New York’s title run.

One of his most memorable plays came late in Game 6 of the Finals, when he climbed over Victor Wembanyama for a crucial offensive rebound off a missed free throw with 26.1 seconds remaining, leading to additional free throws that expanded the Knicks’ lead.

Although Robinson had hinted at off-court difficulties throughout the season, the Facebook message marked the first time he detailed the events behind his hand injury.
