Free agent forward LeBron James is expected to decide soon where he will play next season, according to multiple national reports.
Speaking Monday on ESPN’s “NBA Today,” reporter Shams Charania said the four-time MVP “is inching closer” to selecting a destination. Charania listed the Cavaliers, Heat, Warriors, 76ers and Timberwolves as the primary teams pursuing the 22-time All-Star.
“It’s decision time for LeBron James, because all of the information, for the most part, is in,” Charania said, adding that general managers, team presidents and owners have already presented their cases to James’ agent, Rich Paul. Several NBA players have also contacted James directly to recruit him, Charania noted.
According to Charania, finances will not drive the 41-year-old’s choice. James is said to be focused on joining a roster capable of contending for a title while offering a team culture he believes he can elevate.
Additional teams and Cleveland’s perceived edge
Chris Haynes of “NBA on Prime” echoed Charania’s report and included the Nuggets among the clubs still in contention. Haynes said Rich Paul told him James “has all the information needed,” leaving the final call solely up to the league’s all-time leading scorer.
Despite multiple suitors, rival executives continue to view Cleveland—the franchise that drafted James first overall in 2003—as the favorite, sources told both Charania and Haynes.
Golden State’s recruiting efforts
On ESPN’s “SportsCenter,” Warriors insider Anthony Slater described Golden State’s leadership as “fairly pessimistic” about landing James. Nevertheless, Draymond Green and Stephen Curry have been in direct contact with the veteran forward as part of the team’s pitch.
Slater also reported that the Warriors’ decision to hire Frank Vogel as lead assistant coach was primarily geared toward adding head-coaching experience and defensive expertise beside Steve Kerr, not toward swaying James—though Vogel’s presence could offer a marginal benefit after winning a championship with James and the Lakers in 2020.
League skepticism about other contenders
Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints wrote that Green’s outreach may have slightly improved Golden State’s chances, yet most executives polled at Summer League still believe Cleveland holds the upper hand. Siegel added that league personnel remain doubtful James will choose the Timberwolves or Nuggets.
James has not indicated when he plans to announce his decision.
