Dallas Still Seeking Head Coach With Draft Three Weeks Away

The Dallas Mavericks have yet to name a successor to former head coach Jason Kidd, and the calendar is closing in on the NBA Draft, now less than three weeks away.
One candidate linked to the opening, Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori, said he has had little contact with the organization.
“I haven’t heard anything really from Dallas,” Nori told SiriusXM NBA Radio this week.
Nori’s connections to the Mavericks front office sparked early speculation. New team president Ethan Casson spent more than nine years with the Timberwolves, and Nori briefly overlapped with Mavericks governor Masai Ujiri while both worked for the Toronto Raptors. Despite those ties, Nori indicated the Mavericks have not reached out, though he noted receiving preliminary interest from the Chicago Bulls and Portland Trail Blazers.
The Mavericks have offered no public insight into the direction of their search. Team officials are believed to prefer having a coach hired before the June draft so the new leader can weigh in on roster decisions. However, there has been no indication which candidates have advanced.
League assistants frequently mentioned include Johnnie Bryant (New York Knicks), Sam Cassell (Boston Celtics) and Jared Dudley (Dallas assistant). Veteran head coaches Billy Donovan and Frank Vogel have also surfaced in reports and league chatter.
With top prospect Cooper Flagg projected to anchor Dallas’s long-term plans and a pivotal offseason ahead, securing the right coach remains a critical priority. For now, the franchise continues to keep its search behind closed doors as the countdown to draft night continues.
