Lakers Accelerate Roster Rebuild, Target Kuminga for Defensive Help

LOS ANGELES — The Lakers burned through roughly $50 million in cap space and their $9.4 million room exception in a 35-minute window on July 1, reaching free-agent agreements with Walker Kessler, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton.

According to league sources, the front office is now searching for a young wing to shore up perimeter defense. Twenty-three-year-old forward Jonathan Kuminga is receiving serious internal consideration. Because Los Angeles has exhausted both cap space and its room exception, any offer above the veteran minimum would require a sign-and-trade with Kuminga’s former club. NBA rules mandate that such a contract run at least three seasons, with only the first year fully guaranteed.

Kessler Lands After Doncic Endorsement

A team source said Kessler was “the center Luka Doncic wanted most.” The Lakers believe the former Jazz rim protector pairs seamlessly with Doncic and guard Austin Reaves. To complete the sign-and-trade with Utah, Los Angeles will surrender two first-round picks and two pick swaps.

Grimes Secures Four-Year Deal

Head coach JJ Redick has long coveted Quentin Grimes, per team and league insiders. The Lakers committed $60 million over four years to the two-way guard, banking on his impact at both ends.

James Exit Remains Amicable

All indications point to a smooth split between LeBron James and the franchise. Sources say James and Doncic shared no personal friction and bonded over their recent interest in golf. Doncic publicly called it “an honor” to play alongside the four-time MVP, while James thanked the organization, writing, “Truly an honor to wear the purple and gold.”
