The Utah Jazz plan to add free-agent guard Tamar Bates on a two-way contract, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
Bates, 23, became an unrestricted free agent in March after the Denver Nuggets waived him. The 6-foot-5 guard had joined Denver on a two-way deal last summer following the 2025 draft, where he went unselected out of Missouri.
His rookie campaign was cut short in December when he underwent surgery to repair a fracture in his left foot. Before the injury, Bates excelled with the Nuggets’ G League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Gold, averaging 19.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.5 steals across 13 games while shooting 54.9% from the field, 44.1% from three-point range and 90.3% at the free-throw line.
Under a two-way agreement, players can move between the NBA roster and the G League without counting against the salary cap. If Bates remains with Utah past the league-wide guarantee date in January, he is projected to earn approximately $679,000 next season.
The Jazz ended last season with Elijah Harkless, Oscar Tshiebwe and Blake Hinson on two-way contracts. Hinson’s deal runs through 2026-27, while Harkless and Tshiebwe are set to become free agents.
