Boston forward Jayson Tatum says his next big milestone is clear: win another NBA title and add a Finals MVP trophy to his résumé during the 2026-27 campaign. The All-Star laid out that objective on the “Glass Half Full” podcast, marking a shift from last season, when he entered training camp focused mainly on staying healthy.
Tatum already owns one ring after helping the Celtics capture the 2024 championship, but teammate Jaylen Brown collected MVP honors in both the Eastern Conference finals and the NBA Finals. While Tatum contributed as a facilitator and defender in that series, his scoring touch never fully returned.
The 26-year-old endured a taxing 2025-26 season that included rehabilitation from a torn Achilles. He then missed Game 7 of Boston’s first-round loss to Philadelphia with soreness in his left knee. With no surgeries or rehab schedules ahead, Tatum plans a full summer of unrestricted training.
He told the podcast he even questioned medical staff about whether an MRI could have predicted the Achilles rupture. “Your tendon looked perfectly healthy,” Tatum recalled being told, describing the injury as “just bad luck.”
While Tatum eyes personal and team milestones, Boston’s front office faces a complicated offseason. President of basketball operations Brad Stevens has acknowledged the need to upgrade the roster, according to Brian Robb of MassLive. The Celtics are projected to sit about $19 million below the luxury-tax threshold, with roughly $181 million already committed to 11 players. Avoiding the tax in consecutive years is critical to steering clear of repeater penalties, which could force difficult personnel decisions.
Tatum’s championship aspirations and the franchise’s financial calculus now run on parallel tracks as Boston prepares for the 2026-27 season.
