Edwards applauds Spurs as Wolves suffer another elimination rout

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards offered an uncommon show of sportsmanship during Friday’s Game 6 loss, walking over during a timeout with 8:01 remaining to congratulate the San Antonio Spurs while his team trailed by 33 points at Target Center.

“San Antonio was the better team,” Edwards told reporters afterward, according to ESPN’s Myron Medcalf.

The defeat ended Minnesota’s season and continued a troubling trend. The club has now dropped three straight playoff elimination games by an average of 27 points: Game 5 of the 2024 Western Conference Finals at home against Dallas, Game 5 of the 2025 West finals in Oklahoma City, and Friday’s conference-semifinal closer against San Antonio.

Asked to identify any common thread in those losses, Edwards replied, “Good question. No comment.”

Edwards questions habits, not roster

The 24-year-old guard said he is “content with the current roster” but admitted the Timberwolves “didn’t build championship habits” during the regular season. He declined to suggest how Minnesota can catch Western Conference powers such as the Thunder and Spurs, saying, “I don’t know, man. I don’t think that’s a question for me.”

Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic interpreted Edwards’ gesture as a sign the All-Star recognizes Minnesota has slipped in the West’s hierarchy and could be urging the front office to pursue Giannis Antetokounmpo. Publicly, Edwards maintained that teammates had opportunities when he faced double-teams, though the results were meager.

Supporting cast struggles in Game 6

Julius Randle managed just three points on 1-of-8 shooting and finished a game-worst minus-34 in 23 minutes. Rudy Gobert went scoreless on four attempts, while Jaden McDaniels added 13 points on 4-of-13 shooting before fouling out. In contrast, Spurs rookie Stephon Castle posted 32 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, helping San Antonio close out the series comfortably.

Thompson wrote that Randle appeared miscast as a No. 2 option against title contenders, especially with Victor Wembanyama anchoring San Antonio’s defense.

Hyland wants to return

Reserve guard Bones Hyland, set to become an unrestricted free agent, told the Star Tribune’s Chris Hine that Minnesota “feels like where I belong,” adding, “I definitely want to come back.”

With another abrupt postseason exit, the Timberwolves head into the offseason facing questions about whether tweaks—or more dramatic moves—are needed to keep pace in a rapidly improving Western Conference.
