The Atlanta Hawks’ decision to ship 21-year-old forward Zaccharie Risacher to Oklahoma City on Sunday closes a brief and bumpy chapter for the top selection in the 2024 NBA Draft. Atlanta packaged Risacher and two future second-rounders for guard Luguentz Dort and point guard Ryan Nembhard, a move that improves the roster short-term but ends Risacher’s stint after only two seasons.
Risacher entered the league under former general manager Landry Fields, yet it was current GM Onsi Saleh who sent him out. Because Risacher’s $17.4 million fourth-year option for 2027/28 no longer sits on Atlanta’s books, Saleh avoids a looming decision on the French forward’s future salary.
Though regarded internally as a diligent worker, Risacher often drew questions about his physicality. Head coach Quin Snyder removed him from the starting lineup in February and publicly called for more aggressiveness and rebounding. Despite flashes, Risacher has not matched the early production of fellow 2024 draftees Stephon Castle, Alex Sarr or Donovan Clingan. Whether he can unlock his ceiling in Dallas’ crowded forward rotation remains uncertain.
Second-round pick protections clarified
According to Locked On Hawks, the Thunder will receive the most favorable of Atlanta’s and Houston’s 2031 second-round selections, plus the most favorable of Atlanta’s and the Lakers’ 2032 seconds. Separately, the Mavericks picked up a top-55 protected Atlanta second-rounder in 2027.
Pistons cautious in Jalen Duren talks
The Detroit Free Press reports the Pistons have not offered restricted free-agent center Jalen Duren a 25% maximum contract, even though his All-NBA Third Team berth allows him to seek up to 30% of the cap. Detroit wants to retain the 20-year-old but is wary of overpaying in a market where he holds limited leverage. Whether Duren will accept less than the 25% threshold is still unresolved.
Claxton thanks Brooklyn after move to Chicago
New Chicago Bulls center Nic Claxton posted a message on X expressing gratitude to the Nets organization and its fans. The rim-protecting big man spent his first seven NBA seasons in Brooklyn before being traded earlier this summer.
