Garland Doubts LeBron Will Make Third Return to Cleveland

Darius Garland does not believe LeBron James will wear a Cleveland Cavaliers uniform again.

Speaking on the Ball in the Family Podcast, the current Los Angeles Clippers guard was asked whether James might rejoin Cleveland when the four-time MVP becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer. Garland answered that he “doesn’t see it happening,” citing James’ eight-year residence in Southern California as a difficult situation to leave.

James can enter free agency for the first time since departing Cleveland for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018, a move that has reignited speculation about another homecoming. The Cavaliers have been floated as a possible destination after reaching the Eastern Conference finals this postseason before falling to the New York Knicks.

Cleveland’s roster already features an established core of Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen and James Harden, and adding James would create one of the league’s most compelling storylines. Financial realities, however, present significant hurdles. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst recently reported that James is unlikely to accept a substantial pay cut, while the Cavaliers currently possess little salary-cap flexibility.

Many league observers therefore view a return to the Lakers as the likeliest outcome, yet James’ legacy in Ohio keeps the conversation alive. The Akron native led Cleveland to four straight NBA Finals from 2015 to 2018 and delivered the city’s first major pro-sports title in more than half a century by rallying past Golden State in the 2016 Finals.

James has called that championship the most meaningful achievement of his career, saying, “Winning in Cleveland was a goal that I wanted to do. I always wanted to win one back home.”

For now, Garland remains skeptical that a final chapter with the Cavaliers will materialize, and the financial obstacles appear larger than the opportunity.
