Tim Bontemps, who has covered the NBA for ESPN since 2018, is negotiating with the Atlanta Hawks about a position in the team’s front office, according to Front Office Sports reporters Ryan Glasspiegel and Alex Schiffer.
If an agreement is reached, Bontemps would report to Onsi Saleh, recently elevated from general manager to president of basketball operations and given a long-term contract extension in May.
Bontemps joined ESPN after print stints at the Washington Post and New York Post. His potential move would continue a trend of media figures transitioning between journalism and team roles. Previous examples include John Hollinger leaving ESPN for the Memphis Grizzlies before joining The Athletic, cap analyst Bobby Marks shifting from the Brooklyn Nets to ESPN, Adrian Wojnarowski departing the network to work for St. Bonaventure, Kevin Pelton joining the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun ahead of their relocation to Houston, and Royce Young moving from ESPN’s Thunder beat to Oklahoma City’s basketball operations department in 2021.
No timetable for a final decision has been disclosed.
