The Boston Celtics have added former All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas to their basketball operations department as a professional and college scout, The Boston Globe reported.

Thomas, 37, will work from his hometown of Seattle but has already joined Celtics executives at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago, where he participated in prospect interviews and began learning the organization’s evaluation procedures.

During his playing days in Boston, Thomas enjoyed his most productive seasons, earning two All-Star selections and a spot on the 2016-17 All-NBA Second Team after finishing fifth in MVP voting that year. A hip injury later in 2017 altered his career trajectory, and he was traded that offseason in the deal that brought Kyrie Irving to Boston. He has since had several short stints around the league, with his most recent NBA action coming in the 2023-24 season.

Celtics president Brad Stevens has frequently credited Thomas for helping shape the team culture that has driven the franchise’s recent success. Although Thomas has not formally retired as a player, his new scouting position signals a transition into a post-playing career.
