The Philadelphia 76ers have begun searching for a new general manager after dismissing Daryl Morey on Tuesday, and advisory executive Bob Myers said the franchise is prioritizing a “collaborative” leader committed to delivering a championship.
Speaking Thursday at team headquarters in Camden, New Jersey, Myers outlined the qualities he expects in Morey’s successor. “You need good people that are in harmony,” said the former Golden State Warriors executive, who joined Philadelphia in October and won four titles in the Bay Area. “I’m a big believer in character and leadership.”
Morey posted a 270-212 regular-season record and a 28-26 playoff mark across six years, but the club never advanced past the second round. This season ended in a sweep by the New York Knicks. The front office also faced criticism for February’s trade that sent guard Jared McCain to Oklahoma City in exchange for draft picks.
Target date before the draft
The NBA draft opens June 23, and Myers said he hopes—but is not obligated—to have a hire in place beforehand. “I will not rush the process,” he noted.
Roster evaluation is key
Candidates will be asked whether the current lineup can contend. The 76ers are built around high-salary veterans Joel Embiid and Paul George, alongside rising talents Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. Embiid’s recurring injuries have limited availability, while George served a 25-game suspension this season for violating the league’s drug program.
“The truth is depth may be more important than it’s ever been,” Myers said when assessing the roster’s challenges.
Harris backs spending, Nurse
Managing partner Josh Harris reiterated that head coach Nick Nurse will return next season and said ownership remains willing to exceed the NBA’s luxury tax. “The front office absolutely has the green light,” Harris stated.
Harris also expressed frustration after Knicks fans dominated Wells Fargo Center during Games 3 and 4 of the second round. “It’s our home court. Our job is to come back and win that series next year,” he said.
Philadelphia’s leadership hopes a new general manager, working in unison with existing staff, can push the franchise beyond its current plateau. “It’s not one person that wins championships,” Myers emphasized. “It’s a team of people.”
