The Boston Celtics have added former All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas to their basketball operations staff as a pro and college scout.

According to The Boston Globe, Thomas will work out of the Seattle area, his hometown, joining a network of regional and international scouts already employed by the organization. The 37-year-old spent this week at the draft combine in Chicago alongside Celtics executives, observing prospect interviews and learning the club’s evaluation procedures.

Thomas enjoyed the peak of his playing career in Boston, earning All-Star selections in 2016 and 2017 and finishing fifth in MVP voting during the 2016-17 season. A hip injury that spring disrupted his trajectory, and he was traded to Cleveland later that summer in the deal for Kyrie Irving. He went on to play for several teams and last appeared in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns during the 2023-24 campaign.

President of basketball operations Brad Stevens, who coached Thomas in Boston, has often credited the guard with helping establish the culture that has guided the franchise’s recent success. Despite never formally announcing his retirement, Thomas signaled only six months ago that he was weighing opportunities in Europe after a stint with the Salt Lake City Stars, the Utah Jazz’s G League affiliate.
