The Cleveland Cavaliers are heading into the summer confident they can secure James Harden on a new multiyear agreement, according to reports from The Stein Line’s Marc Stein and Jake Fischer.
Harden Negotiations
League sources told Stein and Fischer that Cleveland expects Harden’s next contract to feature a smaller annual salary than the $39.4 million he earned last season. Early projections place the figure around $30 million per year, a number that could position the club beneath the NBA’s second tax apron and open additional roster-building flexibility.
Harden has publicly stated he is willing to make concessions to keep the roster competitive.
Gansey Draws Front-Office Interest
General manager Mike Gansey recently interviewed with the Philadelphia 76ers for their president of basketball operations vacancy, the report added. Phoenix Mercury GM Nick U’Ren also met with Philadelphia officials, though sources describe Gansey and 76ers assistant GM Jameer Nelson as the leading contenders.
Gansey has played a central role in Cleveland’s front office during the franchise’s return to playoff contention.
Coaching Stability
Despite speculation linking Atlanta Hawks coach Quin Snyder to the Cavaliers during the regular season, team insiders never viewed that scenario as likely, per the same report. Kenny Atkinson was always expected to return for a third year on Cleveland’s bench, and the team has since confirmed his status.
