Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson said he has not settled on a small forward for the postseason lineup, leaving the team’s fifth starting role undecided as Game 1 approaches.
James Harden, Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen are confirmed starters, but Atkinson told reporters he is holding off on naming the final piece. “I don’t want to say something now and then we change it,” he explained, emphasizing that the decision will hinge on matchups.
The Cavaliers used 41 different starting combinations during the regular season, a by-product of injuries and roster adjustments, and Atkinson indicated that the same flexibility will carry into the playoffs.
Toronto’s Immanuel Quickley is listed as day-to-day with a hamstring issue, and the guard’s status could influence how Cleveland fills the open spot against the Raptors. Atkinson has several options: Dean Wade provides size and defense, Max Strus offers perimeter shooting and playoff experience, Sam Merrill can space the floor, and rookie Jaylon Tyson supplies energy and versatility.
“That position is going to be flexible in terms of starting and finishing,” Atkinson said earlier this month. “You have to earn it.” A decision is expected shortly before tipoff of the series opener, but Atkinson acknowledged the choice could change as the postseason unfolds.
