Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson is certain rookie guard Jaylon Tyson will deliver a standout playoff performance soon, despite the youngster’s slow start to the first-round series against the Toronto Raptors.

Speaking after Wednesday’s practice, Atkinson told reporters he has “almost a guarantee” that Tyson is “next up” for a big night. “Max Strus had that big game, the core four had their big games. Next it’s going to be Jaylon Tyson,” the coach said.

Through two games, Tyson has logged 26 minutes, shooting 1-of-8 from the field for five total points. In Game 1, the 22-year-old picked up three quick fouls while guarding Raptors forward Brandon Ingram. Cleveland still won both contests and carries a 2-0 series lead into Thursday’s Game 3 on the road.

Atkinson noted Tyson’s regular-season contributions—reliable three-point shooting, energetic defense and high emotion—as reasons for confidence. The coach added that patience is required as the rookie adjusts to playoff intensity.

Bench production has been a storyline for Cleveland. Strus scored 24 points off the bench in Game 1, but the Cavaliers’ reserves combined for just 15 in Game 2, while Toronto’s bench supplied 46. Atkinson believes Tyson’s emergence could help stabilize the second unit for the remainder of the postseason.

“He’ll have a big game,” Atkinson said. “It’s just a matter of time.”
