Charlotte Hornets head coach Charles Lee said he is encouraged by the club’s summer overhaul, even after trading longtime starters LaMelo Ball to Minnesota and Miles Bridges to Phoenix. Speaking in a two-part interview with The Charlotte Observer, Lee outlined why he believes the roster is positioned for progress.
Coby White returns on three-year, $74 million deal
Lee called retaining guard Coby White a top priority once the Hornets acquired him last season. “We knew we wanted to re-sign him,” the coach said, praising White’s professionalism, three-point shooting and ability to draw charges. Lee added that White does not need to replicate Ball’s style but instead “be Coby White” while directing an up-tempo offense.
Naz Reid adds size and playoff experience
Center Naz Reid arrived from the Timberwolves as part of the Ball trade. Lee described the Sixth Man of the Year as a “big-time get,” citing Reid’s physicality, Western Conference finals experience and locker-room leadership. The coach said Reid’s work ethic and community presence should have an impact “on and off the court.”
Blending youth and veterans
Lee said the current mix of young talent and seasoned players gives Charlotte multiple lineup options and increased shooting. He praised the squad’s unselfish approach and noted that veterans can guide the developing core “from a professionalism standpoint” while still contributing significant minutes.
Next steps for Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel
The coach wants forwards Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel to spend the offseason strengthening their bodies, refining their games and expanding their leadership roles. Lee said both players are “in a really good spot” and encouraged them to keep finding their voices with teammates.
Lee also discussed incoming veterans Grayson Allen and Royce O’Neale, first-round picks Hannes Steinbach and Christian Anderson, and the progress of 2024 lottery selection Tidjane Salaun, telling the Observer the full group is already beginning to mesh.
