Dallas, TX — Newly hired president of basketball operations and alternate governor Masai Ujiri has taken the reins of the Mavericks front office after a two-decade rise that began as an unpaid scout in Orlando in 2002. The following year, he joined Denver’s staff as a paid scout and was promoted to Nuggets general manager seven seasons later, earning 2012-13 Executive of the Year honors. Ujiri then guided Toronto to eight playoff appearances and the 2019 championship during a 12-year run before exiting last summer.
Ujiri’s first major decision in Dallas was naming former Trail Blazers assistant general manager Mike Schmitz as Mavericks general manager. “Incredible scout, incredible leader,” Ujiri said, citing Schmitz’s data-driven approach and reputation for player evaluation.
Spurs credit Sweeney for defensive leap
Associate head coach Sean Sweeney, 41, has emerged as what players call the “unsung star” of San Antonio’s postseason push. After finishing 25th in defensive rating in 2024-25, the Spurs climbed to third in 2025-26. Unanimous Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama said Sweeney deserved “all of the credit” for the turnaround, while rookie guard Stephon Castle praised his “attention to detail” and communication skills.
Popovich remains a guiding presence
Although Gregg Popovich stepped down as head coach following a November 2024 stroke, the Hall of Famer has remained around the team throughout 2025-26. Officially the club’s president of basketball operations, Popovich has offered what players describe as honest feedback and life lessons. “Not everybody has the greatest coach of all time just sitting there,” rookie Carter Bryant said. Devin Vassell added that Popovich continues to stress community involvement and gratitude for the game.
Contract expectations in Houston
League insiders at the draft combine do not anticipate Rockets guard Amen Thompson landing a full 25% rookie-scale max extension this offseason, projecting his deal in the 20–23% of cap range instead. Forward Tari Eason, expected to receive a qualifying offer, is believed to be in line for a new contract worth roughly $22 million per year.
