ESPN is on the verge of sealing a deal for a behind-the-scenes documentary series that will track LeBron James through what is expected to be the last chapter of his NBA career, according to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic.
Marchand reported that negotiations are “at the one-yard line,” though the agreement has not yet been finalized. The multi-episode project would follow the four-time MVP during his anticipated final seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers and incorporate years of never-before-seen footage already captured.
Sources told Marchand that longtime NBA Entertainment producer Andy Thompson—principal videographer on ESPN’s acclaimed The Last Dance series about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls—has been filming James for several years. In 2023, Lakers radio broadcaster John Ireland said Thompson had been “stockpiling” material with an eye toward eventually telling the story of the league’s all-time leading scorer.
James recently described his decision to sign with Philadelphia as the “final move” of his 21-year NBA career. If the ESPN deal is completed, viewers will gain an unprecedented look at how that farewell unfolds.
