Now that six-time All-Star DeMar DeRozan has cleared waivers, league chatter is centering on two franchises: the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat, according to Matt George of Sactown Sports 1140.
“The two teams that we seem to hear the most chatter about in terms of potential landing destinations for DeMar DeRozan are the Miami Heat and the Cleveland Cavaliers,” George said during a recent broadcast.
Cleveland is looking to build on last season’s trip to the Eastern Conference Finals and may seek one more proven scorer to fortify its rotation. Miami, which recently acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo, is expected to keep adding experienced pieces as it restructures the roster around its new cornerstone.
Whether the Cavaliers intend to make a formal offer remains unclear. Cleveland has spent much of the offseason monitoring LeBron James’s free-agency decision, and several potential moves appear to hinge on that outcome. DeRozan could become a fallback option for contenders that miss out on James.
The 36-year-old averaged 18.4 points per game for Sacramento last season after posting 22.2 points the year before. Widely regarded as one of the NBA’s top mid-range threats and a dependable late-game shot-creator, he will turn 37 in August.
