First-round pick Cameron Carr scored 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds to push the Los Angeles Lakers Summer League squad past the Miami Heat, 93-91, in double overtime Sunday at Chase Center during the California Classic.
The Lakers trailed by as many as 14 early and were down 26-17 after one quarter and 49-39 at halftime. Carr kept L.A. close with 12 first-half points, while two-way guard Peter Suder added seven.
A third-quarter surge highlighted by a dunk from Anton Watson cut the deficit to three, but Miami restored a double-digit cushion and led 74-64 entering the fourth. L.A. answered with a 23-13 run; consecutive steals and layups from Watson and Chris Mañon tied the game at 87 in the final minute. A last-second attempt after another steal fell short, sending the contest to a two-minute overtime.
With the score still even, L.A. held for the final possession of the first extra period, but Watson missed a point-blank layup off a drive and dish from Adou Thiero. The second overtime moved to sudden death. Carr’s mid-range jumper rimmed out, yet Watson converted the put-back to seal the comeback.
Carr finished 7-for-16 from the field and 4-for-9 from three. L.A. improved to 1-1 in the California Classic and faces the San Antonio Spurs on Monday at 4:30 p.m. PT on Amazon Prime and ESPN-plus International. The club then heads to Las Vegas with games scheduled against the Oklahoma City Thunder (July 10), Dallas Mavericks (July 11), Los Angeles Clippers (July 14) and Chicago Bulls (July 16); a fifth matchup will be determined later.
